A Whitley Bay butchers that has been serving customers for more than 100 years is celebrating after two of its products were named among the best in the UK.
Nicholson’s, on Park View, beat off tough competition to win two ‘Gold Awards’ in the national Smithfield Awards for its North Shields Steak and Ale pie and Northumbrian Dry Aged Ribeye Steaks.
The awards, organised by the Q Guild of Butchers, recognise the best meat products from UK butchers. More than 200 products were put forward to be judged, with the best products awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold.
Categories included Best Butcher’s Steak, Traditional Pork Sausage and Best Traditional Pork Pie. Nicholsons products were judged at the City of Glasgow College last month by Keith Fisher, CEO of the Institute of Meat, and industry professionals.
Nicholson’s boss, Kathryn Meadows, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded two Gold Awards by the Q Guild of Butchers. They really are a seal of approval from the industry and are a testament to the craftsmanship and creativity of our team.”
Nicholson’s was founded by Kathryn’s great-grandfather, Charles Nicholson, during the First World War and has seen four generations of the family serve Geordies in the same premises it occupies to this very day.
Gordon Wallace, Q Guild manager said: “The Smithfield Awards are designed to help showcase the very best craft butchery while also helping to raise standards and drive product development. More than 200 products were submitted by Q Guild butchers from the length and breadth of the UK this year, in what remains the meat trade’s most prestigious and challenging product evaluation.
“The standard of products submitted was as high as ever this year so to be awarded two Gold Awards is a real achievement.”
