Jurgen Klopp winced and could not hide his debelief after Newcastle United thrashed Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Reds have been joined in the quarter-final stage of the competition by the Magpies, with Eddie Howe’s side avenging last season’s Carabao Cup final defeat with a rout at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Newcastle head coach made eight changes to the starting eleven who earned a point at Wolves last time out, and were forced into a very early change when Matt Targett joined the growing injury list. However, the visitors took a deserved two-goal lead into the break, with substitute Miguel Almiron opening the scoring before Lewis Hall netted his first goal in black-and-white.
Erik Ten Hag made two changes at the interval, and the Red Devils began the second half with greater intent. However, any prospect of a comeback was extinguished around the hour mark as Joe Willock emphatically fired beyond Andre Onana from distance.
Newcastle face another away trip after being drawn against Chelsea, with Liverpool hosting West Ham. The Reds edged past Bournemouth, with Darwin Nunez’s second-half strike proving decisive in a 2-1 win.
Klopp’s result to the reaction was inadvertently caught on camera ahead of the Liverpool manager’s post-match press conference. The 56-year-old was clearly taken aback by the 3-0 scoreline before quickly turning back to his own media obligations.
Elsewhere in the competition, Everton will take on Fulham while Middlesbrough travel to face Port Vale. The quarter-finals are due to be held the week beginning December 19.
