A person has sadly died after being hit by train.
British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to the line, near Wetheral at around 7.45am on Friday to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Officers and paramedics attended and the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Northern Rail passengers faced delays as all lines were blocked while emergency services were in attendance. A bus replacement service was provided.
A BTP spokesman said: “Officers were called to the line near Wetheral at 7.45am today (17 November) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
