Olly Murs was left thanking his fellow coaches on The Voice UK for coming to his ‘rescue’ on Saturday night’s show, having suffered a rather awkward and embarrassing ‘snub’ from a contestant. And the same hopeful split opinion amongst viewers, as they argued that he ‘broke’ the rules with his audition.
Having revealed he’d been ‘hurt’ by ITV bosses’ decision to drop from the next series of the talent programme, Olly has been back on screen for the latest run of the long-running talent search, with the former X Factor runner-up joining Will.I.Am, Tom Jones and Anne-Marie in the judges’ chairs, as a new batch of hopefuls aim to get them turning.
The Voice Blind Auditions rounds continued for 2023 this weekend and one of the first acts onto the stage on a mission to impress was beatboxer Pete Box. A huge fan of 90s rock icons Nirvana, Pete quickly got all of the coaches’ attention with his performance, which saw him loop in different sounds as he beatboxed. Wrapped Up star Olly was the first to hit his button to get a first look at Pete in action, but, Pete ultimately chose to be on Team Will.

That didn’t stop Olly from seizing an opportunity to try and duet with Pete, rushing up from his chair and onto the stage to try and get the contestant to join him in a version of his number 1 track Heart Skips A Beat. However, Pete either didn’t know the song or wasn’t a fan, as he appeared to ignore Olly, as Will.I.Am joined them to help counter the awkwardness, before Anne-Marie joined in to sing a line from Sweet Female Attitude dance anthem Flowers.
After Pete finally left the stage, a visibly mortified Olly returned to his seat and expressed his thanks and relief at the others for stepping in to save him, as some viewers at home were left scratching their heads over how Pete’s audition fitted the brief for The Voice. Taking to X, one posed: “Is this not called the voice?” Thinking the same thing, another posted: “Someone needs to help the judges realise it’s a singing competition. That was dreadful!” with a third blasting: ““IT’S A SINGING COMPETITION!!!”
