Sunderland supporters’ belief summed up by final day celebrations as play-offs pose new question

With the match at Deepdale still goalless and in the balance, even the most optimistic of Sunderland fans would have felt uneasy when checking the half-time scores on Monday afternoon.

Coventry were level with Middlesbrough and looking strong in a game they only had to draw, and with Millwall leading 3-1 against a Blackburn side without a win in nine matches, the Black Cats’ hope of a play-off spot were fading fast.

The fact that it took less than 20 minutes for a five-goal swing to tip the scales in Sunderland’s favour just proves how unpredictable the final day of the Championship season would be, but that didn’t stop supporters from nailing their predictions before the match.

Asked last week whether Tony Mowbray’s men would make the play-offs, 58% responded with confidence that they would earn a place in the top six. When ChronicleLive asked who would finish where, the most popular response (43%) was that Millwall would be the side to miss out to the Black Cats, a prediction that came true in dramatic fashion.

Sunderland’s sixth-placed finish set up a semi-final against Luton, and ChronicleLive are once again asking you to have your say ahead kick-off on Saturday evening.
