Sam Fender delights Newcastle’s Live Theatre with ‘surprise’ appearance at Purely Belter show

Sam Fender is among many Geordies to have flocked to the Live Theatre over the last few weeks to see a show inspired by hit Newcastle film Purely Belter, with the Seventeen Going Under star’s’s attendance delighting both the cast and crew of the production and staff at the famous venue.

It goes without saying the Sam has had quite a year, with him once again touring the globe with his band, getting to open for musical idol Bruce Springsteen in Italy and the small matter of his two sell out gigs at St James’ Park, which will go down in history and live long in the memory of anyone lucky enough to get a ticket to be there.

And now, the North Shields singer has had a chance to be in the audience for a change, as he took his seat to watch Gerry & Sewell, the play that has had everyone talking and been putting plenty of bums on seats down on the Quayside during its acclaimed run. A must for any fans of 00s cult classic Purely Belter, the show is based on the book that inspired the film, Jonathan Tulloch’s The Season Ticket and focuses on Gateshead lads Gerry and Sewell’s mission to get just that – a season ticket for their beloved Newcastle United.

The show earned rave reviews for its run at Laurels in Whitley Bay, before having exactly the same reaction at the Live Theatre. And on person who looked like he had a ball when he went to see it was Brit Award winner Sam. Live Theatre celebrated the successful run of Gerry & Sewell in an Instagram post on Monday, showing Sam with cast members Dean Logan, Jack Robertson and Becky Clayburn and Jamie Eastlake, artistic director at Laurels and the man who brought Gerry & Sewell to the stage

They captioned it: “We would like to wish team #gerryandsewell massive congratulations on a fantastic run on our main stage!!! Reviews & audience feedback has been amazing & it has been a pleasure to have the place packed out for such a belter show including a visit from @sam_fender!”
