Sainsbury’s shoppers confused after some are left out of Christmas Nectar points offer

Sainsbury’s customers have been left confused after some were left out of a popular Nectar card offer in the run-up to Christmas.

The grocery giant has quietly relaunched its popular Nectar ‘double-up’ promotion after it was axed in 2021 in favour of personalised offers and discounts. The offer, now called ‘Points Power Up’, lets shoppers swap points for vouchers worth twice the normal amount. However, not all shoppers can access Points Power Up, and many have taken to social media to ask why.

According to MoneySavingExpert.com, 100,000s will be able to take part in the promo, although Sainsbury’s wouldn’t confirm the exact number of cardholders eligible, or what the criteria is.

According to reports, you need at least 2,000 points to take part and the maximum you can swap, in total, is 10,000 points. One Nectar point is usually worth 0.5p, so 2,000 points would normally be worth £10 when redeemed.

There are currently around 18 million Nectar accounts. Several shoppers have shared their success in qualifying for the offer in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, but many more have take to X, formerly Twitter, to ask why they have been left out.

@trudyfeltham said: “I haven’t received a double up invite despite being a loyal Sainsbury’s customer for years. I save up my points especially every year and now I can’t use them. Who decides that I am not worthy?” while @WideAwake2023 said: “Points Power Up – swap your points For Sainsbury’s voucher & get double their value, but only for selected accounts – that is not fair Nectar.”

@Shelleywalkhot1 said: “Very disappointing to see that not all customers have the opportunity to double their Nectar points! Especially considering I shop every week at Sainsbury’s and buy all my fuel from there as well. Guess I will go elsewhere!!!” @Sarahpvfc asked: “Why are some customers being offered double up on their Nectar points and not everyone? Are some customers more important than others ?!”

To check if you can take part in Points Power Up, you’ll need to look for the offer in your Nectar app. You may also be able to see if you have access to the offer online at Nectar.com – but be aware the app is the only way to swap your points.

If eligible, you can double the value of your points and you’ll have have until Friday November 24 to do this using the Nectar app. Vouchers will be valid for one month from the date of the swap and they also must be used in one transaction – you won’t get change if your basket total comes to less than the value of your voucher. Vouchers can be spent in store or online and unlike previous double-up promos, the vouchers are not limited to certain categories of products such as clothing, homeware or electricals.
