Tricia and Cathie have been crowned BBC’s Race Across The World winners.
The eight-episode TV series saw five pairs take part in a literal race across the world as they travelled through various countries. The contestants were pushed to their absolute limits as they made their way through extraordinary terrain whilst on a limited budget.
The pairs are given a GPS tracker, a world map, a travel guide and a money belt of cash, but they are not allowed to catch a flight as a mode of transport.
The pairs travelled over 16,000 kilometres from Vancouver, Canada, on the Pacific Coast to St John’s on the island of Newfoundland.
During the final episode last night, three contestants were left in the race, but only one pair could be crowned the 2023 winners.
The pair that managed to reach the finish line first was best friends Tricia and Cathie, with married couple Mobeen and Zainib placing second, and father and daughter team Ladi and Monique placing third.
After their triumphant victory, both Tricia and Cathie felt mixed emotions. Tricia said: “It is just crazy madness but amazing, absolutely amazing. We’ve raced across the whole of Canada, with sod-all budget, eaten cream cheese and crackers, got lost in Stanley Park and we’ve come first. How bloody amazing is that!”
Teammate Cathie added: “I’m totally elated, I feel just total elation mixed with a bit of disbelief. I’m overwhelmed, it’s incredible. I think it’s the best way to say thank you to all of the people in Canada who have helped us get here. It’s just unreal.”
Fans were delighted to see the pair win and one took to twitter and wrote: “Absolutely brilliant! Well done, ladies. I love the strength of your friendship! Let’s hear it for the girls!! Well done to all of the competitors. I would have been happy with any of the final three couples winning tbh each for different reasons. Well done, all!”
Another said: “Great contestants all round. Would have been great for any of them to win. All inspirational in their own ways but my goodness what a gent Ladi is – if the world was full of Ladi’s it would be a much better place!”
A third chimed in: “Thoroughly enjoyed this series. Would have been happy for any of the couples to win. Was wanting them all to win for differing reasons. Well done ladies. You are fantastic friends. Congratulations.”
Although there is not yet a release date for season four of the show, fans will be pleased to know that a celebrity spin-off will happen soon!
BBC commissioning editor Michael Jochnowitz confirmed the spin-off during a press conference for Race Across The World season three, where he also revealed the series has already been filmed.
