Pick your Newcastle United XI to face Leeds as Howe faces forwards dilemma

Eddie Howe won’t make any drastic decisions following Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal last week, but still has plenty of options should he decide to tweak his starting XI for Saturday’s clash with Leeds United.

The Magpies are looking for a response to the minor Gunners setback at Elland Road, and given that they’ll likely need just two wins to secure a Champions League place, they will hope they can claim a big three points against the relegation-threatened Whites. Sam Allardyce takes charge of his first home game in charge of Leeds, but saw his side drop into the bottom three following their battling defeat to Manchester City, coupled with wins for Nottingham Forest and Leicester.

Howe started Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson against Arsenal and could be tempted to do the same again, with Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Anthony Gordon all pushing for a starting place. Sean Longstaff’s injury means it’s likely to be the midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock and Joelinton, with the familiar back four of Trippier, Schar, Botman and Burn expected to start in front of Nick Pope.

But what about a small change in formation tomorrow? Could Bruno and Joelinton sit deeper as a pair and allow Willock or Isak to operate more as a No 10, with the other wide? It certainly works with Gordon or Saint-Maximin too should they start or come off the bench.
