Newcastle United will make the Champions League once again according to a statistical-based ‘supercomputer’ that has predicted the outcome of the Premier League season. The Magpies will finish the campaign on 73 points (rounded from 73.4), beating table-topping Tottenham Hotspur to fourth position.
Manchester City win the title in this situation with Arsenal coming in second and Liverpool in third. It predicts disappointment for Chelsea and Manchester United, who sit eighth and ninth respectively. Aston Villa and Brighton make up the seven European spots in sixth and seventh.
The possibility of this happening would really throw the ‘big-six’ idea into question as several clubs start to emerge to claim these spaces. With European competitions being revamped in the coming years, clubs with a prestigious heritage like Man United will be hoping to take advantage of UEFA coefficient rankings that are designed to favour the sleeping giants.
Such a scenario would be music to the ears of Newcastle fans, though, as it would demonstrate their rapid progress over such a short period of time. Their club started the season quite slowly, losing three of the first four league matches, but they have since gone on a six-game unbeaten run in the league while competing in the Champions League.
The predictor has cast misery on Sheffield United, Luton Town and Bournemouth with Burnley expected to beat the drop in 17th. With just 32 points (32.5), the Clarets would be expected to have enough to avoid relegation.
Newcastle fans will rejoice in the knowledge that their club are a long way from the relegation battles under former owner Mike Ashley. They will hope that these predictions come true and that Eddie Howe is able to create a dynasty at the top with their club.
