Newcastle United evening headlines as Magpies still have Ruben Neves transfer option

Here are the latest Newcastle United headlines for Saturday, November 18, 2023.

Neves option

Newcastle United have constantly been linked with Al Hilal star Ruben Neves over a January loan move – but they may have to pay cash for the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers star.

Eddie Howe recently admitted he admired the Portugal international who stars for Newcastle’s affiliate club in the Saudi Pro League. With Premier League clubs expected to vote for a rule change that may prevent the Magpies loaning stars from one of their four affiliate clubs in the Middle East, there would be nothing to stop Newcastle from purchasing the player in January.

That was the case when Newcastle sold Allan Saint-Maximin for a fee of £30million in the summer window. Back then there were more rumblings and objections from rival clubs but the deal was given the green light.

As things stand, Neves’ value is between £40m to £50m after his summer move from the Premier League to Saudi Arabia. That move is understood to have cost Al Hilal around £55million.

Schar on Howe

Fabian Schar has paid tribute to Eddie Howe for taking the majority of the Newcastle United players that he inherited on the club’s exciting journey forward.

The Switzerland international centre-back has been an integral part of Howe’s rebuild on Tyneside but he is not alone with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron, Joe Willock, Joelinton and Callum Wilson all hitting their best levels in a Newcastle shirt under Howe. With another transfer window looming, and new targets being eyed up by Newcastle, the core group of stars that were in the dressing room when Howe walked through the door in 2021 show no signs of moving on.

Schar said: “It has been the story of improvement from not just the club but every individual. In the last three years we have been on a brilliant journey to be fair.

“And everyone has stepped up. As for the togetherness in the squad I have never had this before. It’s unbelievable really. I’m just really happy to be part of it.

“That’s the same for many other players. We just try to fight for each other and I think we have been so much better and made so much improvement in three years that, it’s great to see.”
