Newcastle United head into today’s clash with Arsenal knowing the game could massively impact there top-four hopes while simultaneously having a huge effect on the title race.
Seven wins from there last eight games suggest the Magpies will not let anyone get in there way though when it comes to securing Champions League qualification. Arsenal meanwhile will hope to put there poor form behind them and put a dent in the Magpies top four ambitions as they look to put the pressure on Manchester City, in a title race that looks to be slowly slipping away from them.
Pundits from across the media have been giving their predictions ahead of the weekend’s action – here’s what they have been saying.
Sutton wrote in his weekly predictions for BBC Sport: “I was at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday and Arsenal were very good – but there is an argument that Chelsea made them look very good.
“I thought Gunners defender Jakub Kiwior had a really good game against the Blues, but stopping an in-form Newcastle side is a much bigger ask. The way the Magpies take the game to teams is great to watch and there is no way whatsoever this one will end goalless again, like it did when they met in January.
“Arsenal need to keep winning to keep the pressure up on Manchester City, and a draw is not enough for them. Sadly for them, I can see Newcastle nicking this and continuing their impressive form.
Merson wrote for SportsKeeda: “This could be the game that finishes Arsenal off in the Premier League title race, as Newcastle United are in incredible form. Eddie Howe and co have been unbelievable at home this season and are well-positioned to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
“If Arsenal win this, I think they title race could be back on, as Manchester City have a bunch of interesting games coming up. Both Arsenal and Newcastle have played fantastic football this season and this will be a great contest, but unfortunately, I can’t see Arsenal winning this one. The pressure will be on them and the Magpies are a tough nut to crack at St. James’ Park, so I think this game will finish 1-1.”
Lawrenson wrote for PaddyPower: “I just have a feeling that this game has 1-1 written all over it.
“Defensively, Newcastle have been very, very good this season. They also have a very strong home record – only Liverpool have won at St James’ Park all season. Teams find it difficult to go and play there. Arsenal in their last few games have been conceding goals. They’ve got ahead in games and been hauled back, so I can see this being quite tight and it finishing as a score draw.
Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Arsenal
