Here is your latest 4am Newcastle United transfer digest.
Leonardo latest
Marcos Leonardo is one of the recent names to emerge in connection with the Magpies, and not the first rising star from Brazil tipped with a St James’ Park switch. Matheus Franca and Andrey Santos were both linked before sealing their respective moves to Crystal Palace and Chelsea.
Leonardo is considered one of Brazil’s brightest talents, and has been linked with both Newcastle and West Ham as well as European heavyweights such as Real Madrid and Roma. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insists it is an ‘open race’ for the Santos attacker, and any deal would be worth around £17 million.
He told Caught Offside: “He will leave Santos in January and the price could be around €20m, but it’s a complicated package that could include add-ons, percentage on future sale etc. Roma wanted him last August but they had three bids rejected, and now it’s a very open race.”
Mourinho Plan B
Jose Mourinho was previously touted as a potential contender to assume the St James’ Park hotseat following the takeover in October 2021. The Special One has a strong affinity with the Magpies as a result of the friendship he established with Sir Bobby Robson during his time in Barcelona.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Real Madrid boss is currently in his third season with AS Roma, and speculation is mounting over whether the 60-year-old will remain in the Italian capital. Il Tempo via Corriere Giallorossa claim Newcastle remains a potential destination for Mourinho should the club ever part ways with Eddie Howe.
