Newcastle evening headlines with Raphinha’s transfer response and Longstaff injury latest

Here are your top Newcastle United headlines for May 10.

Raphinha’s transfer response

Barcelona winger Raphinha has angrily rubbished claims he is open to leaving Barcelona amid reported interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea.

Raphinha has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside of late, with Spanish outlet Sport this week claiming the former Leeds United man had ‘given the OK’ for Barcelona to tout his services. The publication suggests £80m is the price for his signature this summer amid interest from the Magpies.

Fanatico Sport Futebol, an Instagram account with over one million followers, this week shared the Sport speculation on their social media channels, prompting an angry response from Raphinha himself in their comments section. “Lies. The person who said this is a liar and uninformed,” the Brazilian commented.

Souness and Pardew backing

Graeme Souness and Alan Pardew have both backed Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe to win the Premier League’s manager of the season award.

Newcastle currently lie in third place in the table as the Magpies bid to return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. There may still be four games to go but to put that turnaround into perspective, Newcastle finished 11th last season after Howe took over a side who were winless and second from bottom in November, 2021.

Although Newcastle have spent money, that is no guarantee of success as Chelsea’s recent splurge has proved and it is worth pointing out that Howe has lifted a number of individuals he inherited to new heights, including Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy. Indeed in last week’s game against title-chasing Arsenal, half of the players who featured were already at the club when Howe was appointed and Souness has certainly taken note.

Longstaff latest

Newcastle United are hopeful of seeing Sean Longstaff back in action before the end of the season after scans showed he had broken no bones in his foot following a recent injury, Chronicle Live understands. The academy graduate missed the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday as Eddie Howe admitted further tests were needed to determine the severity of the injury.

“I won’t go into the technicalities, but whereas we thought it was quite a standard injury, a bruise, now there may be a chance it’s something a bit more serious than that,” Howe said. “We’re in the dark at the moment.”

Lascelles on injury

Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles has broken his silence after being ruled out for the remainder of the campaign. The Magpies defender has a calf issue which will keep him sidelined for around six weeks after only a handful of appearances this term.

Lascelles played in the defeats at Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League but impressed with his displays after being replaced by Sven Botman and Fabian Schar in Eddie Howe‘s defensive pecking order. Fans also respected his commitment to the cause after picking up two yellow cards on separate occasions despite not being on the pitch.

“Unfortunately, since I last wrote for the programme, I’ve picked up a calf problem which will probably see me out for five or six weeks,” said Lascelles in Sunday’s matchday programme. “But I’ll still be at every game, supporting the boys. It’s a real shame, but I’m confident I’ll have a speedy recovery.

Bowen on failed move

West Ham star Jarrod Bowen has recalled how he missed out on a move to Newcastle United because the club wouldn’t pay £14m for him in 2020.

The 26-year-old joined the Hammers from Hull City, but almost made the move to St. James’ Park instead if the Magpies hadn’t been so tight with their cash. The move would’ve seen him be reunited with Steve Bruce, with the then-Newcastle manager having helped Bowen find his best success with the Tigers.
