Newcastle United will be hoping to advance in the Carabao Cup at Manchester United’s expense on Wednesday night.
Eddie Howe’s side earned four points against Man United last season but suffered a 2-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford proved to be the difference on the day and Newcastle will be keen to avoid a similar result, this time around.
Newcastle should head into the game in a confident mood, despite not winning their last two matches, having already knocked out Manchester City in September. Alexander Isak’s goal succeeded in eliminating Pep Guardiola’s side and Newcastle will hope to record another statement result against Man United at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag faces the challenge of raising his players’ spirits after a 3-0 defeat in the Manchester derby on Sunday. The Red Devils had won three consecutive games, prior to the weekend, but their performances have remained unconvincing. The Man United boss will be expected to rotate his side against Newcastle on Wednesday.
Manchester United injury news
In terms of Man United’s squad, Casemiro could be available for selection after missing the club’s last three games through injury, while teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is also back to full fitness.
Defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has returned to training after more than a month on the sidelines. However, the club’s defensive injury worries continue, with Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw all unavailable.
Predicted Manchester United XI vs Newcastle
Goalkeeper Andre Onana kept his place for Man United’s win over Crystal Palace in the previous round, but it would not be a surprise to see summer signing Altay Bayindir make his debut for the club in the Carabao Cup.
In defence, Diogo Dalot will likely keep his place at right-back, while on the other flank Sergio Reguilon should be handed a start. Raphael Varane can be expected to partner Harry Maguire at centre-back, in favour of the experienced Jonny Evans.
Casemiro will be at the base of midfield, if passed fit, and could be partnered by Mason Mount. Hannibal Mejbri started in the previous round and may replace Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 role.
Alejandro Garnacho could claim a left wing berth, should Marcus Rashford be rested, while Facundo Pellistri will be jostling with Antony for a start on the right flank. Up front, Ten Hag has already spoken about the demands being placed on Rasmus Hojlund, which could give Anthony Martial an opportunity to lead the line against Newcastle.
Predicted Manchester United XI vs Newcastle: Bayindir; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Reguilon; Casemiro, Mount; Hannibal; Pellistri, Martial, Garnacho.
