
Erik ten Hag has vowed to ‘fight’ on after Newcastle United fans taunted that the Manchester United boss was going to get ‘sacked in the morning’.
Injury-hit Newcastle dumped the holders out of the Carabao Cup with a superb 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. It was just Newcastle’s second win at the so-called Theatre of Dreams in half a century.
The victory was all the sweeter for the 7,300 Geordies in attendance following last season’s defeat in the final against the same opponent at Wembley. Those in the away end even repeatedly chanted: ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning!’ at ten Hag.

Ten Hag acknowledged after the game that the performance fell ‘below the standards everyone expects’ following his side’s eighth defeat of the season. The Dutchman was asked after the game if he doubted himself at all as the man to take Manchester United forward.
“I understand it when the results are not there,” he told reporters. “It is also a logical process that they are questioning that, but I am confident I can do it.
“At all my clubs I have done it and also last year I did it here as well, but at this moment we are in a bad place. I take responsibility for it. I see it as a challenge.
“I am a fighter and I am in that fight and I have to make sure that I share the responsibility with my players and that we stick together and fight together, and get better results.”
