Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier has withdrawn from England duty due to a ‘personal matter’, the club have confirmed. The right-back featured in Friday’s 2-0 win over Malta but will play no part in Monday’s clash with North Macedonia as he returns to Tyneside.
Trippier was the only Newcastle star in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this round of internationals after Callum Wilson was forced to withdraw through injury earlier in the week. The Newcastle vice-captain played the entire 90 minutes at right-back as the Three Lions side failed to impress at Wembley against Malta.
Newcastle supporters will no doubt be sending to their support to Trippier after hearing the news of his withdrawal. The Geordie faithful fully backed the full-back after a clash with an angry supporter following the 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last weekend.

“You fans are amazing!! So many gorgeous messages. Don’t worry, KT is not panicking about that 1 fan last night,” wrote Trippier’s wife, Charlotte, in the hours after the minor spat. The fan in question has since apologised for his outburst at the Vitality Stadium.
As for Trippier’s form for England, the Newcastle favourite is fully aware he needs to keep impressing at St James’ Park to book his place on the plane for Germany next year. “I need to keep performing well for my club first,” he said of Euro 2024 selection.
“There are so many good full-backs in England at the moment, I need to focus on my own performances. Obviously I want to be there but I know I need to be playing at a high level to be successful.
“I’ve always believed in myself. I’ve always had challenges in my career. I’ve always been up against top right-backs for many years now and it’s just about believing in yourself.”
