Kai Widdrington broke down in tears on camera on Sunday night, as he became overcome with emotion in the aftermath of him and Angela Rippon’s elimination from Strictly Come Dancing.
It was three months ago that last year’s Strictly Christmas special winner Kai and broadcasting icon Angela were first introduced to each as this year’s couples were revealed. After both being delighted by being paired with other, their partnership took them all the way to week nine of the new series, with them giving viewers at home some really memorable routines, including their cha cha cha in week one and amazing Argentine Tango.
Sadly for Kai and Angela, after their excitement at making it to Blackpool and getting to perform in the iconic Tower Ballroom, their weekend by the seaside came to a disappointing end when, after landing in the bottom two for the third week in a row, they lost out in the dance-off to Bobby Brazier and Dianne Buswell, who made an unwanted debut in the danger zone.

Kai and Angela’s Strictly exit was sealed by a unanimous vote from the judges and, after Angela held it together to tell host Tess Daly how she’d had ‘he time of her life’ on the BBC programme, Kai became a lot more emotional upon hearing Angela speak so enthusiastically about her Strictly journey, as well as heaping praise on him for being an exceptional partner and joking about their 51 year age gap, with her being 79 and him 28.
Kai’s breakdown didn’t go un-noticed by Tess, who joked that he could do with a tissue before he said: “I wasn’t even born when she did Come Dancing and I had to ask my parents about this incredible Morecambe & Wise moment. There’s a 50 year age gap, but I feel like I’ve known her for 50 years.”
Gesturing to Angela, he added: “I’m so proud of you and you should be so proud of yourself and it’s been my absolute honour and pleasure to dance with you, especially in this beautiful ballroom.”
