Newcastle United come up against their old manager Sam Allardyce when they take on Leeds United
Newcastle visit Leeds looking to secure another three points in their race for Champions League football. To do that however they will have to take a trip down memory lane and face off against one of their former managers – namely Sam Allardyce.
Big Sam’s time on Tyneside began 16 years ago, replacing Glenn Roeder as Magpies boss way back in May 2007. Allardyce’s appointment came at a time of change for Newcastle, with Mike Ashley taking the control of the club not long after Big Sam’s appointment.
Coming off the back of a very successful spell as Bolton manager, as well as the fact the club had signed a whopping nine players that summer – hopes were high at the start of Allardyce’ reign. The eight months that followed however did not live up to the fans expectations as despite starting well, the sides form fell off close to Christmas with some notably poor results against the likes of Wigan and Derby.
With his side sat 11th in the table, Allardyce was then sacked in January 2008, being replaced by fan-favourite Kevin Keegan. In what was a busy transfer window for Newcastle and ‘Big Sam’, we thought it would be worth taking a look at those nine signings and see where they are now.
