The world watched on as the two monarchs were officially crowned in a prestigious and formal ceremony and now things are expected to get a little lighter and a lot more informal over the course of the weekend-long celebrations.
Yes – we’re referring to the Coronation concert where the likes of Take That, Paloma Faith and Lionel Richie will take to the stage to perform their archive of hits.
One other famous face that will be gracing the stage is American A-lister, Katy Perry. The 38 year old has also been confirmed to play at the major event, and is expected to treat fans to her iconic stage show, which includes plenty of eccentric outfits and a lot more of her smash singles.
But in terms of her relation to the Royal family, the Firework singer is actually pretty close with the King, and the pair share a unique friendship. Which is one of the reasons she’s been selected to play a huge role in the occasion.
So, let’s take a look back at Katy and Charles’ relationship timeline, from her ambassador role to the King asking the popstar for a selfie…
Katy is an ambassador for King Charles’ British Asian Trust
Katy first met then-Prince Charles back in 2019 when the pair were both in India.
The following year, she teamed up with the royal and became an ambassador for his British Asian Trust, which according to the official website, “works to tackle the widespread poverty and hardship in South Asia to which millions are currently subjected.”
The singer works specifically with the trust’s Children’s Protection Fund for India, which aims to reduce abuse and child trafficking within the country.
When Katy announced she would be working alongside the royal, she detailed how she was impressed with the organisation’s plans.
“That is why I am especially honoured to be named an ambassador for the British Asian Trust’s Children’s Protection Fund, and to help shine my light on the work that the British Asian Trust will be doing in South Asia, and to be a part of finding solutions to child trafficking,” she said at the time.
“Children are vulnerable and innocent and have to be protected.”
After the pair’s first meeting, Katy also took to the gram to wish HRH a happy birthday, and to detail their shared passion for the environment.
“Happiest 71st His Royal Highness Prince Charles @clarencehouse,” she typed.
“It was a pleasure spending a little time with you and many brilliant Indian minds looking for incredible solutions to making India a more wonderful place through your organisation @thebritishasiantrust.”
“I’m so glad some of the focus is on sustainability and solutions to protecting the environment. Thank you to @adarpoonawalla & @natasha.poonawalla for inviting me to the conversation last night.”
King Charles asked Katy for a selfie
During the 2019 Mumbai trip, King Charles’ former private secretary revealed to the monarch that he and his family – especially his kids – were huge Katy Perry fans.
Scott Furssedonn-Wood worked for the royals between 2017 and 2021, and amid the Katy Coronation news, recently recalled on Twitter how the King had gone out of his way to request a selfie for him.
“Exciting that @katyperry is performing at #CoronationConcert. I was with The King in Mumbai in 2019 when he first met her. I had told him how much my kids loved her,” he tweeted.
“Those of us in the team never asked for selfies. So HRH kindly asked for me ‘He and his family are such fans!’”
The selfie for Scott’s family also ended up with Charles posing for a snap next to the A-list singer, which obviously sparked a great working relationship between the two.
Katy revealed how excited she is to play at the Coronation
In a recent interview with Extra, the mum of one has opened up about how happy she is to be a part of the Coronation celebrations.
“I’m really excited. I might be posting a lot because I’m gonna be in a castle, for real. This is wild.”
As well as addressing how much of an honour it is to be able to take part in the event, Katy also highlighted that the performance will be an opportunity for her to get closer to the royals in terms of her ambassador work.
“I’m an ambassador to one of his foundations for the British Asian Trust, which primarily focuses on ending child trafficking,” she said.
“It just aligned with all my values when the King asked me to sing,” she concluded.
