I’m A Celeb medic reveals reason campmates told to wear red socks in jungle

Have you ever wondered why the campmates in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! wear red socks?

You’d be forgiven for assuming that it was simply a fashion statement, but in reality, there’s a rather grotesque reason why.

Former medic on the show, Bob McCarron, told Women’s Own that the cast are likely to be bitten by the likes of leeches and ticks – which can leave marks and traces of blood on their skin – and the socks are there to conceal these. Stars of the show wear a very specific uniform year in, year out, which comprises of khaki shorts and hats, as well as red trousers and vests emblazoned with their names and numbers.

And Bob has also spoken about other ailments that can quickly rip through the camp as celebrities settle into their new home of three or so weeks. On the series’ spin-off Extra Camp, he explained: “Most people think of fungus as mushrooms but we have problems with the cast every year, especially women, growing fungus on certain body parts [breasts]. I’ve been instructing them to use the shower and personal hygiene a little bit more often.”

The Star reports that the 23rd season of the widely-watched show launched on Sunday and features a number of household names ready to face their deepest fears in the Australian jungle. Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage is in the mix with the likes of This Morning’s Josie Gibson, JLS singer Marvin Humes, First Dates’ Fred Sirieix, EastEnders star Danielle Harold and popstar Jamie Lynn Spears to name a few.

Ahead of the show, the latter said: “There is literally every misconception you can have on a person about me so I don’t take any of it seriously. But I do think going on I’m A Celebrity will be a nice way for people to see the real me.

“This is an opportunity to be myself and do something really cool and have some awesome experiences in the meantime.”
