How to watch Fenwick’s Christmas Window reveal this Sunday

It might be just the start of November but it soon will be looking a whole lot like Christmas in Newcastle as one of the city’s best-loved attractions prepares to make its debut.

Fenwick‘s Christmas Window display is a highlight of the season for many and the big date for this year’s unveiling is this Sunday, November 5 when its 2023 theme will be revealed, no doubt adding lots more sparkle to a night already set to see Bonfire Night celebrations around the region, if the rain stays off long enough. And the switch-on of the city‘s festive lights and launch of its Christmas market will soon follow suit.

As has been the case in recent years, since the pandemic raised concerns about gathering crowds, the area of Northumberland Street around Fenwick will be closed and instead the ‘curtain-drop’ will be shown online. Once again people are asked not to go to the store in person.

Those wanting to watch the action live can do so from the comfort of their own home. Fenwick invites everyone to watch the unveiling on launch night on either its YouTube channel; TikTok account or on Instagram so keep an eye out on whichever is your pick of those.

The time to start watching is 6.30pm. The store says the reason it closes off the section of street on the launch night is in the interests of public safety, although there will be – as usual – a small number of invited guests in attendance who tend to be children and families from the store’s partner schools as well as local hospitals and charities.

But other families won’t have too long to wait to see the window in person for themselves as, once the theme is unveiled, the display will be open to visitors from Monday, November 6. The theme, which differs every year, is always a closely-guarded secret so the unveiling is eagerly-awaited every November.

Here’s a reminder of its themes over the years. Store manager Kieran McBride said: “We’re looking forward to creating yet another year of Fenwick Christmas magic for the local community and people all around the world.”

The virtual event has proved hugely popular, with hundreds of thousands of people across the world tuning in for a ringside seat. A Facebook or Instagram account will be needed to watch the stream on those channels. Those wanting to subscribe to Fenwick’s YouTube channel to watch the unveiling there can do so here.
