Chris Bell from Forest Hall is two-thirds of the way through a mammoth Land’s End to John O’Groats trek – and his pictures are sensational
Greggs employee Chris Bell is now two-thirds of the way through an epic Land’s End to John O’Groats hike raising cash and awareness of mental health causes – and the keen photographer has snapped some astonishing pictures on his way.
Chris, from Forest Hall, began in Land’s End six weeks ago and has now crossed the Scottish border near to Kirk Yetholm. He’s smashed his fundraising target so far, and said he had been thrilled by the support and camaraderie he’d experienced up and down England.
An avid hiker who’s evangelical about the power of the outdoors, Chris has struggled with depression and anxiety over the years. His adventure, which he has titled A Journey Through Britain on Foot for Mental Health, has thus far raised almost £3,000 for the charity Mind. That’s smashed his initial aim of £1,250.
Chris told ChronicleLive: “I crossed the border on Saturday and went through to Jedburgh. I’m pushing the 800 mile mark now – that’s around two-thirds of the way! Six weeks done, and four weeks to go.
“I’m doing great, my feet feel fine and I haven’t suffered too much with blisters. The support has helped massively – It’s been wonderful. I’m at home in the outdoors and it’s been an incredible experience.
“One of the best things has been the people who helped along the way. Everyone I’ve met has been so kind. I’ve had people giving up beds for me in pubs, but it’s even the little things like making me a cup of tea or sharing a bit of cake.
“When you are doing something as big as this, people seem to really like being able to help out.”
Chris, who has been taking on the challenge largely on his own, though has been backed by friends and family. He planned his route to maximise the “incredibly beautiful” parts of the British countryside he could visit, and has spoken about how he also wants to remind people what glorious places we have to be proud of.
His bosses and colleagues at Greggs have also been hugely supportive, even allowing him ten weeks off for the challenge. He has also been sharing pictures from his journey regularly on Facebook.
