Gareth Southgate admits Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is ‘very close’ to England callup

Gareth Southgate admits Anthony Gordon is ‘very close’ to earning a senior England callup following an impressive start to the season. The Newcastle United forward has been a standout star for Eddie Howe’s team so far, excelling in every frontline position.

Gordon was named Player of the Tournament after helping England under-21s to European Championship glory in the summer. However, the 22-year-old is yet to be handed an opportunity at senior level with the Three Lions, and reports suggest Scotland could attempt an ambitious charm offensive to convince the former Everton prospect to change his allegiance.

Southgate was quizzed on Gordon ahead of the final Euro 2024 qualifying clashes with Malta and North Macedonia, with England’s place in the competition next summer already confirmed. The Three Lions boss admits he is a fan of the Newcastle forward and singled out his work-rate for praise, but admits there is strong competition for places in the attacking areas.

He told reporters: “He’s a good player. He was very good with our Under-21s last year. He’s very close, I have to say. I like his attitude, I like the way he works so hard for the team.

But I think, like a couple of others, they’ve always got to think a little bit further ahead as to, you know, opportunities that can come up. I think for somebody like Anthony that’s eminently possible with us.”
