Newcastle United named an incredible 13 English players in their squad to face Borussia Dortmund last week and it’s clear to see why Eddie Howe has chosen to favour his fellow countrymen when competing in Europe.
In a world where registration rules and homegrown quotas are increasingly influential it’s vital to lean on English talent – and the Magpies boast that in abundance. Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon all started for the Toon against Dortmund.
Another seven homegrown stars made the bench – Paul Dummett, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento were unused substitutes while Callum Wilson, Matt Targett, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock were all brought on.
But how does Newcastle’s use of native players compare to the approaches favoured by the club’s domestic rivals? We focused on the English teams in European action last week and examined how “English” their respective cores really are.
(For this article ‘English’ is defined as being born in England, rather than choosing to represent the national team.)
