As Lola Pearce’s death creeps ever closer, it appears the EastEnders favourite couldn’t catch a break this week, as her deteriorating health dealt the much-loved character yet another devastating blow on Wednesday.
As regular viewers will know, Lola is currently battling a terminal brain tumour, with her fate tragically sealed in the coming weeks.
Yet despite her devastating diagnosis, Lola has continued to champion for positivity and joy in Albert Square, and has even thrown plenty of parties such as for the Coronation and her Grandpa Billy’s birthday in recent days.
But as her condition continues to progress, maintaining her energy levels has become nigh on impossible, something which lead Lola to make the heartbreaking decision to quit her job on Wednesday.
Things had initially been off to a positive start as she arrived at the salon with the intention of helping out, but after a client made a comment about her daughter’s birthday (something Lola wouldn’t be alive to see) Lola slowly retreated away from her colleagues and friends to do some soul searching.
Despite her keen desire to continue work, she was too exhausted and unable to do her job safely, prompting Lola to tearfully tell Denise that she needed to quit.
Smiling through the pain of losing something she clearly loved, Lola found a firm source of comfort in Denise as the two shared an embrace, with her boss telling her that she would always be there for her, no matter what she needed.
It was then that the pair decided that they could throw Lola a leaving party, a final parting gift to say goodbye on a high and with nothing but fond memories in tow.
Fans at home were left in tears by Wednesday’s scenes, as it showed how Lola’s diagnosis had touched on so many different aspects of her life.
Taking to twitter one fan wrote: “That was heartbreaking to see Lola’s reaction to her thinking about missing the big milestones in Lexi’s life.”
“Poor Lola I can’t believe that she’s dying soon,” added another.
A third then commented: “Poor Lola having to stop working and doing something she loves has truly broken my heart. Billy has just be bragging with how much money he made in Portugal, why can’t he cover cost and help her?!”
“Lola saying “see you in 7 weeks” to a customer when she probably won’t be alive,” sobbed another fan.
Before another viewer wrote: “Poor Lola she knows she got to give up her hairdressing job due to her declining health.”
Similar sentiments were then echoed by another fan who commented: “That Denise and Lola hug. My heart is breaking.”
