Bibliophiles praise ‘brilliant’ Tynemouth Market gifts offering a ‘blind date’ with a book

A Tyneside market stall and online shop is injecting a bit of mystery into the lives of book lovers – by making their next read a complete surprise.

One More Chapt3r is perfect for anyone who simply can’t decide what they want to read next, or want to be surprised with a new story picked out just for them. The concept behind the gifts is that customers are set up on a so-called ‘blind date’ with a book, which is wrapped up to keep its cover hidden – meaning that they don’t know what title they’re going to get until they’ve already bought it.

Michelle Monaghan from Killingworth, who works as a domestic in a care home, decided to set up her shop as a hobby earlier this year in a bid to share her love of reading with others. Michelle, 32, hoped to give pre-loved books a new lease of life, including those in her own extensive collection, so all books from One More Chapt3r have been previously owned and either read once or not at all.

When it comes to their blind date with their next book, customers can choose from their favourite genre, including romance, thriller, crime or young adult, or leave it as a complete surprise. Each title comes wrapped up to keep the mystery going, complete with literature-themed stickers, a bookmark, a teabag to enjoy a cuppa curled up with your new read, and a thank-you card, available on Etsy for £7.95.

You can also get a gift box from for £12.50, which also contains chocolate, a face mask, bath bombs, a review page and a colouring page to give the book lover in your life a relaxing night of pampering as they get lost in a new story. As well as being available online, Michelle also has a regular stall at Tynemouth Market where customers can select their next mystery book by hand.

You can send over your Goodreads list or a picture of your bookshelf over to One More Chapt3r, and a new read will be picked out just for you based on what you enjoy. The ‘blind date with a book’ concept is something that reading lovers have taken part in in their thousands, with plenty of listings on the likes of Etsy and Not On The High Street, but readers on Tyneside have loved supporting Michelle’s take on the trend.

“We have had amazing reviews so far, and everyone says how cute or beautiful they are,” Michelle said. “I would love to say thank you to all my customers, for sharing my love of books and giving my pre-loved books a new home.”

One More Chapt3r has racked up several five-star reviews so far, with one person writing: “Such an amazing concept! the cutest packaging, thoughtful extras included and helping to reuse and recycle books while supporting a small local business!”

A second customer said: “Asked for a surprise for my lovely friend I described a little bit about her, and asked for a surprise, and the book that she chose was perfect. Wonderful customer service and quick delivery. Thank you.”

“As a huge lover of books, I’m very excited to read one chosen just for me,” another person wrote. “Brilliant business, brilliant service.”

And someone else commented: “Absolutely amazing. Love the anticipation of what my book could be, and couldn’t be any happier.”
